A government spokesman assured yesterday Wednesday that the Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, surrounds his government’s Defense Minister, Christine Lambrecht, who was heavily criticized for a video she made public on New Year’s Eve, with his absolute confidence.
Ms Lambrecht uploaded a video to social networking site Instagram in which she referred to the challenges of 2022, particularly Russia’s war in Ukraine, as fireworks were heard exploding in the background.
She was criticized for insensitivity — after all, Kyiv was under a Russian hammering at the same time — and opposition parliamentarians went so far as to call for her resignation, accusing her of a series of slip-ups.
However, asked yesterday whether Mr Scholz continued to surround Ms Lambrecht with full confidence, deputy government spokesman Wolfgang Buchner replied “yes, of course”.
“The chancellor works well and in an atmosphere of trust with all members of the cabinet. And of course this also applies to the aforementioned minister,” he insisted.
Ms Lambrecht, a senior member of the ruling coalition’s Social Democrats (SPD), like the chancellor, may face fresh criticism at her party’s conference next week, however.
