According to the Italian media, it is estimated that in St. Peter’s Square and the surrounding streets, more than sixty thousand believers flocked to watch the religious ceremony.
“We deliver our brother into the hands of the Father. Let these hands, full of charity, find the lamp lit with the oil of the Gospel, the word of which he spread during his life”, emphasized Pope Francis, shortly before the end of the ceremony.
Francis approached and prayed, resting his hands on the coffin.
The body was then transferred to the Vatican caves, where the German pontiff was buried.
