The Met Office announced that the average annual temperature reached 10C for the first time, the highest on record since 1884
Britain experienced its hottest year on record in 2022, the National Met Office confirmed yesterday, saying that human-caused climate change has made a rise in temperatures around 160 times more likely.
The Met Office announced that the average annual temperature reached 10C for the first time, the highest on record since 1884.
“The results showed that recording 10°C in a natural climate happens about once every 500 years, while in our current climate it could happen every three to four years,” said Meteorological Service scientist Nikos Christidis, commenting on a study, which examined the causes of temperature change.
The agency’s findings, which confirmed preliminary results published at the end of December, were released as the new year saw record high temperatures in parts of Europe, prompting calls from campaigners for faster action to tackle climate change.
