The Mexican drug lord Ovid Guzmanson of jailed Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, has been arrested by Mexican authorities, four officials with knowledge of the matter said.
The news of Ovidio’s arrest came after a night of riots in the city of Culiacan, in the northern Mexican state of Sinaloa, home to the Ovidio cartel, one of the world’s most powerful drug-trafficking organizations.
Ovidio Guzmán, who assumed a leadership position in the Sinaloa Cartel after his father was arrested, was briefly detained in October 2019, but was quickly released to avoid reprisals from the cartel.
This morning, security forces were on foot trying to limit the reactions of the Guzmán family in the area.
Culiacan airport has been closed and will remain closed until 10pm local time.
Local authorities called on residents to stay in their homes. Schools and administrative offices remained closed due to the violence. Unverified videos posted on social media sites show a heavy exchange of fire, including from helicopters, during the night. Roadblocks were also erected.
“We ask the citizens of Culiacan not to leave their homes due to the blockades in various parts of the city,” Mayor Juan de Dios Gámez wrote on Twitter.
