A unilateral Russian ceasefire in Ukraine ordered by President Vladimir Putin took effect across the entire front as of noon Moscow time (11:00 Greek time), Russian state television said.

“Today at noon, the ceasefire regime went into effect along the entire contact line,” state-run Russian First Channel reported. “It will continue until the end of January 7.”

Zelensky rejects the truce proposal

Meanwhile, yesterday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of seeking a truce in order to stop the advance of Ukrainian troops in the Donbass region and reinforce the occupation forces.

“They now want to use Christmas as a pretext, even for a while, in order to stop the advance of our men in Donbas and bring in equipment, ammunition and troops,” Zelensky said, among other things, in a videotaped speech.

“What will this do for them? Just another increase in their losses to date,” he added.

The president of Ukraine emphasized that the war “will end only when your soldiers leave or we drive them out.”
