Biden exalts resistance to the invasion of the Capitol and remembers the attack as a dark period

by

On the day that marks the second year of the invasion of the US Congress, President Joe Biden led this Friday (6) a ceremony in honor of the security agents who resisted the mob inflamed by Donald Trump in an attempt to prevent the confirmation of victory of the Democrat in the 2020 elections. The episode was pointed out by the president as one of the “darkest in the history of the country”.

At the White House, the American praised injured police officers and relatives of agents killed after the invasion. He also warned of the risk of extremist actions in the US, which he still sees as “very real”. The honorees received the Presidential Citizen Medal from the president, classified by him as one of the highest civilian honors in the country.

The honorees, according to Biden, had “exemplary and heroic” acts that will be remembered by generations to come. “History will remember their names, their courage and bravery. Also for their extraordinary commitment to their countrymen.”

Two years after the episode, classified as one of the biggest attacks on democracy in US history, the FBI arrested more than 950 people – the investigation is considered the largest in the history of the agency. Part of the invaders is criminally liable for assaulting security agents. One of them died the next day, after two strokes, and four others committed suicide.

The US president said at the ceremony that a violent mob broke the law by vandalizing White House halls and assaulting officials to try to “overthrow the will of voters and usurp the transfer of power.”

“Two years ago, our democracy was attacked. There’s no other way to say it,” Biden reinforced as he opened his speech. “The US Capitol was breached, which had never happened before in US history, even during the Civil War.”

Biden did not mention in his speech the stalemate played by the Republican Party in the House of Representatives. This Friday, the party had still reached a consensus to elect the President of the House after 13 rounds of voting and already on the fourth day of debates.

California Republican Representative Kevin McCarthy, the main name of the House, faces strong opposition from the party’s ultra-right wing. Part of the radical group still echoes the false thesis that there was fraud in the 2020 election.
