EU: Borel characterizes the unilateral ceasefire in Ukraine as “hypocrisy” by Moscow

“The Kremlin has no credibility and this declaration of a unilateral ceasefire is not credible,” said Josep Borrell

The head of European diplomacy Joseph Borel called the truce announced by Russia in Ukraine, on the occasion of Orthodox Christmas, “hypocrisy”, considering it “not credible”.

“The Kremlin has no credibility and this declaration of a unilateral ceasefire is not credible,” Borrell told reporters on the sidelines of a visit to the Moroccan city of Fez.

“The reaction that comes to everyone’s mind is skepticism in the face of so much hypocrisy,” he added.

In order for the truce to be considered valid, it should stop the military attacks completely “to withdraw (Russian) troops and military material from Ukrainian territory,” Borel explained after the meeting he had with students of the Euro-Mediterranean University. “In the absence of such concrete actions, the unilateral truce looks like an attempt by Russia to buy time to regroup its soldiers and try to restore its damaged name,” Borel stressed.

The European official also denounced Russian “propaganda” that blames “European sanctions” for soaring food and energy prices, which are hitting Africa hard. “This is completely wrong. The Russian army destroyed the grain warehouses, destroyed and planted mines in the fields, destroyed roads and blockaded ports in Ukraine,” he stressed.
