The Russian-appointed governor of the city of Sevastopol in Crimea said today that anti-aircraft defense shot down a drone in what he described as the latest attempt by a Ukrainian attack on the port that is home to the Russian Black Sea Fleet.

Mikhail Razvozaev, the Russian-backed governor of the city, made the claim on messaging app Telegram, claiming the incident occurred in the early hours of January 7 (today), Christmas Day in the old calendar.

“Even the holy holiday of Christmas was no reason for those merciless people to stop their attempts to attack our Heroic City,” Razvozaev wrote.

There is currently no comment from Ukraine, which in the past has not confirmed similar incidents, but has made it clear that it reserves the right to do whatever it deems necessary to return the region to its territory.

Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 and Kyiv says it is determined to retake the Black Sea peninsula along with a swath of eastern Ukraine and other territory seized by Russian forces since they invaded on February 24 last year.

Crimea, which Russia says is now part of its territory, was one of the starting points for what Moscow calls a “special military operation” and has been attacked several times — most notably in August, when a series of explosions destroyed warplanes at a Russian base.

Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed a truce to coincide with his country’s Christmas Day, a proposal Kyiv rejected as a cynical ploy to buy time for Russian forces to rest and regroup.
