The House of Representatives turned into a “ring” before the president of the body was elected Kevin McCarthy…

The “Pyrrhic victory” of McCarthy, who was finally forced to make many concessions to “rebel” Republicans to be elected speaker of the House of Representatives after four tense days and 15 votes, was marred by the unprecedented episode on the 14th ballot. But the “cauldron” in the Republican camp was “boiling” much earlier, while there was a wave of indignation against the “hardline Trump” rebels…

A highlight was the moment on the 14th ballot, when Rep. Matt Gage finally declared “present,” angering fellow Republican Mike Rogers, resulting in Rep. Richard Hudson to step in, and headlock the enraged Rogers away, to avoid the worst, as he believed that Gage was bargaining at his expense to allow McCarthy’s election…

The unprecedented event in Congress gave the public a taste of the backstage and byzantine shenanigans that unfolded in the Republican camp to finally elect McCarthy, and brought to mind the TV series House of Cards.

McCarthy’s 15th Ballot Victory Ends Deepest Congressional Dysfunction in over 160 yearsbut also demonstrated the difficulties he will face as the head of a thin and deeply polarized majority.

He eventually won by a vote of 216-212. He managed to get elected with less than half the votes of the members of the House of Representatives because six members of his own party did not vote – they did not support McCarthy and also did not vote for another candidate.

The president Joe Biden congratulated Kevin McCarthy calling on him to “govern responsibly and in the interest of the American people”.

“I am ready to work with Republicans when possible, and voters have made it clear that they expect Republicans to be just as ready to work with me,” the US president said in a statement.

“I’m glad it’s over,” McCarthy himself told reporters shortly after the vote.
