Kosovo: New demonstrations by Serbs over the injury of two young compatriots

Albanian, a member of the special forces of the Kosovo army, opened fire and wounded an 11-year-old and his cousin – KFOR rejected the request for a military presence of Serbia in Kosovo

Thousands of Serbs demonstrated today Sunday in the city of Streptse in southern Kosovo in protest of the wounding of two young compatriots by an Albanian soldier. Last Friday, January 6, Christmas Eve for Orthodox Serbs, an Albanian, a member of the special forces of the Kosovo Army, while off duty, opened fire from his car and wounded an 11-year-old and his 21-year-old cousin.

The victims are hospitalized with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds to the upper and lower extremities.

The crime was nationalistically motivated given that the perpetrator knew they were Serbs since they were holding an oak branch, a symbol of family prosperity, which Serbs traditionally bring home on Christmas Eve.

The perpetrator was arrested and is being held while the prosecutor proposed his pre-trial detention.

Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti condemned the incident and assured that justice will be served. The president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, said that this is a manifestation of the violence and terror that Serbs in Kosovo live every day.

KFOR rejected the request for a military presence of Serbia in Kosovo.

At the same time, KFOR’s response to Serbia’s request to return to Kosovo was negative 1000 policemen and soldiers.

The Serbian government submitted, on December 16 last year, a formal request for a military and police presence in Kosovo invoking UNSC Resolution 1244 from 1999, which provides for this possibility under conditions.

As the president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, said today, Sunday, January 8, the command of the international military force in Kosovo rejected the relevant request.

“KFOR has informed us in writing that it has determined that there is no need for the return of Serbian security forces to northern Kosovo. It was something we expected,” said Vucic.

The president of Serbia decided that there is no reason to raise the issue in the UN Security Council, because only Russia will support Serbia’s request while all other members will vote against it.
