Images reminiscent of the storming of the US Capitol on January 6, 2021 – Using tear gas, Brasilia police try to push back hundreds of supporters of Jair Bolsonaro
Scenes of chaos, reminiscent of the invasion of the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, are unfolding right now in Brazil. Supporters of the former president Zach Bolsonaro stormed the presidential palace, ministry buildings, Congress and the Supreme Court in Brasilia on Sunday, international agencies report citing eyewitnesses.
Brazilian President Inacio Lula da Silva is in Sao Paulo.
Police in Brasilia are using tear gas to push back hundreds of supporters of far-right ex-Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who have flooded the area around Congress and scaled the building, a week after leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was sworn in.

The zone around the Congress was cordoned off by heavy police forces. However, Bolsonaro’s supporters, who refuse to accept Lula’s election to the presidency, managed to break the cordon. Dozens of them climbed the ramp of the building and climbed up to the roof.
The dramatic footage shows a crowd of people heading towards Congress.

Demonstrators also occupied the green of neighboring buildings, including the Planalto presidential palace.
Bolsonaro, defeated by Lula in the second round of the presidential election, left the country late last week and is in the United States.
