US, EU and Latin American Presidents Condemn Bolsonaro Attacks in Brazil

“Violence has no place in a democracy,” tweeted US Chargé d’Affaires in Brasilia Douglas Koneff

The US, the EU and many Latin American countries condemned the invasion of Congress, the Supreme Court and other government buildings in Brasilia by supporters of Jair Bolsonaro on Sunday.

“Violence has no place in a democracy,” tweeted US High Commissioner to Brasilia Douglas Koneff. “We strongly condemn the attacks on the institutions of executive, legislative and judicial power in Brasilia, which is also an attack on democracy. There is no justification for such actions,” he added.

The US embassy in Brasilia urged US citizens to avoid the area “until further notice”.

The president of the European Council Charles Michel, in a tweet, he also condemned the attack.

Colombia’s leftist president Gustavo Petro expressed his solidarity with his Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. “Fascism has decided on a coup,” he commented.

The president of Chile, Gabriel Borich, also expressed his government’s full support for Lula, calling it a “brazen attack on democracy”.

The president of Mexico Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador he also condemned the “conservative coup attempt” in Brazil, in a tweet.

“Lula is not alone, he has the support of progressive forces in his country, in Mexico, in the Americas and around the world,” Obrador added.
