Lula ordered the National Guard to move in to restore order in the capital

In his televised sermon, from São Paulo where he is, President Inacio Lula da Silva called the attack in Brasilia “barbarism” and warned that all those involved would be “found and punished”.

“There is no precedent in the history of Brazil,” said a visibly angry Lula. He called those behind the congressional raid “fanatical fascists” who represent “the most hideous thing” in politics.

The president ordered the National Guard to move in to restore order in the capital. He also ordered the closure of the center of the capital Brasilia – including the main avenue where administrative and government buildings are located – for 24 hours. Lula declared federal intervention in the capital, until on January 31in order for the security forces to regain control of the city and restore order.

The Brazilian president said the perpetrators would be found and punished “with all the force of law”. As he characteristically declared, “these fanatics did something that has never been done before in this country”.

“The police did absolutely nothing… They just let the protesters in,” Lula said. The leftist president also promised that the authorities will also find the “financiers” of the Bolsonaros, while pointing out that “there are many speeches” of the former president Zach Bolsonaro by which it encourages these invasions.
