Pope Francis attributes attacks in Brasilia to the weakening of democracy in the world

Pope Francis lamented this Monday (9) the political crises spreading across the Americas and mentioned Brazil by name, where radical supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro invaded the Esplanada dos Ministérios, vandalizing public buildings and confronting democratic institutions.

“I am thinking of the countless political crises in various countries of the American continent, with their load of tensions and forms of violence that exacerbate social conflicts,” Francis said in a speech to the Vatican’s diplomatic corps.

“I am thinking especially of what happened recently in Peru and in the last few hours in Brazil,” he added, referring to the attacks in Brasilia and the protests that have spread across the Andean country since the attempted coup d’état by former President Pedro Castillo.

For the Argentine pontiff, the “weakening of democracy in many parts of the world is worrying.

The leader of the Catholic Church joins several world leaders who condemned the coup acts this Sunday (8) in Brasilia. Heads of State and government of dozens of countries expressed repudiation of what they called an attack and attack against democracy and democratic institutions. The reaction to the Bolsonaristas insurrection also includes messages of support and solidarity for President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).
