“The United States is Sweden’s most important security and defense partner, both bilaterally and within NATO,” the Swedish government said
THE Sweden and the United States have begun negotiations to forge deeper security ties in the form of a Defense Cooperation Agreement (DCA), the Swedish government said in a statement today.
A defense cooperation agreement would create the legal framework for the presence of US forces in Sweden and allow for even closer bilateral cooperation than would be facilitated by joining the NATOthe Swedish Ministry of Defense said.
“The United States is Sweden’s most important security and defense partner, both bilaterally and within NATO,” the ministry said.
In May, Sweden and Finland have asked to join NATO in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but their membership still awaits the approval of Hungary and Turkey, members of the North Atlantic alliance.
