The admission to a hospital of the former president of Brazil, Jáich Bolsonaro, “with abdominal pains”, his wife, Michelle, confirmed with her post on Instagram
The two options available to the former president of Brazil Zach Bolsonaro to remain in the US, the US State Department pointed out.
The US Department of State emphasizes that anyone who entered the United States with an “A” visa, issued to heads of state and diplomats, must or leave the country within 30 days, or to apply for a different type of visa if he no longer holds an official position.
Jair Bolsonaro reportedly used an ‘A’ visa to travel to Florida two days before the end of his term in order to avoid attending the swearing-in ceremony of Luis Inacio Lula da Silva. He was in the US when his supporters launched an attack on Brazil’s presidential palace, Congress and Supreme Court.
State Department spokesman Ned Price said at a press conference that he could not comment on anyone’s visa status, but referring to the rules surrounding the process, he said: “If someone is not in the US legally, then the Department of Homeland Security can deport them. removes”.
The hospitalization of the former president of Brazil “with abdominal pains”, he confirmed in the meantime his wife, Michelle;
“He is under observation” for “abdominal problems,” Michelle Bolsonaro said in an Instagram post, without specifying which hospital her husband was admitted to. His condition does not inspire concern, according to sources close to the couple.
Earlier, the Brazilian newspaper O Globo reported that he was admitted to the AdventHealth Celebration Hospital in Orlando, the day after the attack launched by his supporters against the presidential palace, Congress and the Supreme Court of Brazil.
Bolsonaro arrived at Florida on December 30thtwo days before Lula’s inauguration.
The former president was reportedly rushed to an Orlando hospital on Monday.
Unsubstantiated claims
Bolsonaro may be in no rush to return to Brazil, where he is accused of inciting a violent movement to deny the election result by making baseless allegations of fraud.
Lula, who has already warned he will go after Bolsonaro if necessary, blamed him yesterday for the invasion. “This genocidal (…) is encouraging (ie the riots) through social networking sites from Miami. Everyone knows that there are many speeches of the former president in which he encourages all this,” he emphasized.
Bolsonaro was already under investigation, in four Supreme Court cases, before he loses the presidency. Legal experts said he could be the target of another Supreme Court inquiry into the anti-democracy protests, for which several arrests have already been made. If Justice Minister Alexandre de Moraes issues an arrest warrant while Bolsonaro is in the US, the former president would theoretically have to return to Brazil and surrender to police. If he refuses, Brazil can issue a “Red Alert” through Interpol to request his arrest by the US Federal Police. Brazil will then have to formally request his extradition. Bolsonaro can appeal in US courts or even seek asylum – but there is no guarantee that this will prevent his eventual return to Brazil.
Former Panamanian President Martinelli was extradited by the US to Panama in 2018, three years after the country’s Supreme Court issued an arrest warrant against him.
