The great rival of Alexandros Nikolaidis, the Korean Moon Dae Sung, honored the memory of the Greek Olympian, as he visited his grave in Thessaloniki
His death Alexandrou Nikolaidis has caused grief in Greek sports, but also in Tae Kwon Do worldwide. The Greek Olympian had faced him Moon Dae Sung in the final of the 2004 Olympic Games by which he was defeated.
Eighteen years later, and visibly moved, Moon Dae Soonng was in Greece and visited the Philyros cemeteries in Thessaloniki to leave flowers on the grave of his opponent, wanting to honor his memory in this way.
“We had a strong relationship between us for quite some time. He loved Korea and I love Greece. For me, Greece is like my second country. I am very sorry that I came late. We were close, we had a very strong relationship” he said to ERT.
At the 2004 Olympics, the Korean champion faced Alexandros Nikolaidis in a take-home match. Moon, however, wanted to anoint Nikolaidis the winner by raising his hands, but Alexandros did not accept it, thus offering one of the most beautiful moments of the Athens Olympic Games, with the two of them embracing.
