General Alexander Lapin, who “failed” in Ukraine, is the new marshal in Russia

Lapin came under heavy fire from Putin allies as Russian forces were driven out of the eastern Ukrainian port city of Liman.

The Kremlin has appointed General Alexander Lapin as head of the ground forces, the TASS news agency reported today, despite criticism over his performance in Ukraine.

Lapin, a former commander of Russia’s Central Military District, came under heavy fire from allies of Russian President Vladimir Putin after Russian forces were driven out of the eastern Ukrainian city of Liman.

His appointment followed a series of sweeping changes in Russia’s military leadership during the 11-month war in Ukraine.

After the withdrawal of Russian forces from Liman, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov and Wagner mercenary founder Yevgeny Prigozhin strongly criticized Lapin.

Kadyrov had declared that he should be stripped of all his medals and sent to the front to fight in order to wash away his shame in blood.
