‘Stop screwing him’ – Russian doctors ask Putin to provide medical treatment to Navalny

Russian doctors in an open letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin ask him to stop taunting opposition politician Alexei Navalny, who has been placed in solitary confinement for the tenth time so far in prisons in the Vladimir region, and to provide him with the required medical treatment.

The open letter was published on the Facebook page of doctor Alexander Vanyukov and on the investigative journalism website Meduza.

The letter states that the detention conditions and appearance of Alexei Navalny cause great concern for his life and health. The refusal of the representatives of the Russian Federal Prison Service to deliver medication to the imprisoned opposition politician directly threatens the health and life of the Russian citizen Alexei Navalny.

“From a medical point of view, it is obvious that Alexei does not receive the required medical care to an adequate extent, while keeping him in solitary confinement is completely contraindicated for his condition.

We demand that the taunting of Alexei Navalny stop, we demand that they stop putting Alexei in solitary confinement, we demand that he have access to civilian doctors and, if there are indications, that he be admitted to a regular hospital for full tests and treatment,” it says in letter. At the same time, the doctors point out in their letter that the provision of medical care is constitutionally guaranteed not only for citizens but also for prisoners.

The letter was signed by 36 doctors, most of them from Moscow.

Yesterday it became known that Navalny, who is serving a prison sentence in prison colony No. 6 in the city of Melekhovo in the Vladimir region, was sent to solitary confinement for the tenth time.

Russian opposition politician Vadim Kobzev’s lawyer said Navalny is ill. “Unfortunately, the bacteriological weapon worked. Navalny is currently in isolation with a fever, chills and cough. We are trying to send him medicine,” Kobzev wrote yesterday.

Navalny has been in prison in the Vladimir region since June 2022. He was given additional punishments after he announced last August the formation of a prisoners’ union challenging the conditions of his detention. Among the grounds on which Navalny was sent to solitary confinement were not buttoning his uniform, refusing to wash a wall, not wearing the top of the prisoner’s uniform, speaking indecently and not going to wash the exact time.
