The commitment of the United Kingdom to support the efforts of the United Nations to achieve a solution to the Cyprus problem was reaffirmed by the Minister for Europe Leo Doherty in a reply letter to the pro-Cypriot Conservative MP for North London Theresa Villiers.

Mrs. Villiers had raised in her letter to the Minister of Foreign Affairs issues concerning the Cypriots, following a meeting she had with members of the parish organization British Cypriot Council.

Undertaking to answer, Mr. Doherty noted that a solution “will increase the prosperity of Cyprus and strengthen the security and stability of the region”, as well as that to this end the United Kingdom is actively engaging with all parties involved.

He also referred to the agreement of the Foreign Ministers of the two countries for close cooperation towards a just and lasting solution “within the parameters of the United Nations” during their meeting in London two months ago. Mr. Doherty adds that during the visit that Ioannis Kasoulidis made, he was also received by the Deputy Minister responsible for United Nations affairs, Lord Ahmad.

“The UK continues to support a solution in line with the parameters of the UN, based on the model of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality – a model that is internationally accepted and which we believe is broad enough to meet the concerns of both sides.” , said the letter from the Minister of Europe.

Mrs. Villiers had made special reference in her letter to the developments regarding Famagusta.

Mr. Doherty replied that London still supports the relevant resolutions of the United Nations Security Council.

He also reminded that Britain had reacted with a National Declaration, with which it expressed concern, at the announcements by the leaders of Turkey and the pseudo-state for further opening of the closed city. At the same time, he pointed out his country’s support for the immediate reaction of the Security Council.

Doherty’s letter to Ms Villiers continued with a firm appeal to all sides to avoid any actions or statements that could harm the prospects of a solution. He noted that ultimately it is up to the leaders of the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots to determine the details of a solution.

The letter concluded with the assurance that the United Kingdom, as a guarantor power and friendly country to all parties, will continue to provide support to the efforts of the United Nations, including the deployment of military personnel to UNFICYP.
