Afghan authorities condemned the “cowardly attack” and vowed to do everything possible to identify and punish those responsible.

At least five people were killed and dozens of others injured in today’s suicide attack outside the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kabul, a Taliban spokesman announced.

Afghan authorities condemned the “cowardly attack” and vowed to do everything possible to identify and punish those responsible.

Earlier, Afghan media reported that up to 20 people had been killed and another 26 injured. The Italian NGO Hospital Emergency reported that first aid was given to more than 40 injured people.

A driver working for the French Agency (AFP) was in the area at the time of the attack and gave his testimony. “I saw about 20-25 victims. I don’t know how many of them were dead and how many were wounded. I was waiting in the car when I saw a man with a Kalashnikov on his shoulder and a bag. He passed my car and after a few seconds there was a loud bang. I saw this man blow himself up,” said Jamshed Karimi.

“A suicide bomber attempted to break into the ministry, but failed to achieve his goal. When it was spotted by security forces, it blew itself up,” a Taliban government official, Ahmadullah Mutaki, said.

So far there has been no claim of responsibility for the attack.

10 days ago, the Islamic State jihadist group claimed responsibility for the bombing at the Kabul military airport.

After the Taliban returned to power in August 2021, the self-proclaimed Islamic State has stepped up its attacks in the country.

Afghanistan has been isolated from the West due to human rights violations and especially the marginalization of women.
