USA: The discovery of classified documents in Biden’s old office puts the White House in a difficult position

The documents date from 2013 to 2016 and cover issues such as Ukraine, Iran and Britain

The White House, visibly in a difficult position, was confronted on Wednesday with persistent questions after the discovery confidential documents from the period in which Joe Biden was the vice president of the United States in the old office of the American president.

So far Biden’s services have confirmed that “a small number of documents that have been classified” — about ten—were found “in a locked cabinet” at the Penn Biden Center, a think tank where the US president used to have an office.

However, his associates found “at least one additional package” of documents, as NBC News revealed yesterday.

According to a source with knowledge of the case, cited by CNN, the documents are dated from 2013 to 2016 and concern issues such as Ukraine, Iran and Britain.

They were mainly found in this office of Biden personal or family documents, including some regarding Bo’s son’s funeral arrangements and letters of condolence. It is not clear if the boxes with the classified documents contained any personal ones.

The documents were spotted on November 2, just six days before the midterm elections, but the matter did not come to light until Monday, January 9.

After the new revelations, the case is expected to continue to cause turmoil in US political life and may also affect the investigation into the many classified documents that were found at the Florida home of former President Donald Trump after he left the White House. .

In Trump’s case, the FBI searched his home in Mar-a-Lago, where they were seized thousands of documents.

Biden himself said on Tuesday that he was unaware that any classified documents had been moved to his personal office after he left the vice presidency, stressing that his lawyers “did the right thing” by immediately calling the National Archives, where all must be turned over. the secret and classified documents after the end of the term of the president and the vice president.

The case does not appear to be as serious as Trump’s, but it raises questions especially for a president who prides himself on his ethics.

Trump has already asked for a similar search of the American president’s homes to the one that was carried out in his own home: “When will the FBI search Joe Biden’s many residences, even the White House?”, he responded.

Already, in an effort to limit the backlash, US Attorney General Merrick Garland has assigned the investigation of the case to a Chicago federal prosecutor, John Laws Jr., who has been appointed by Trump.
