Through the team, players find a glimmer of hope for their inclusion in our society.
Sport can be a powerful tool for integration, relief, health promotion and human connection.
Hope Team is a men’s basketball team created by coach Costas Egletzos. It consists of 15 refugees and immigrants and 3 coaches and all join their efforts to provide a safe space for immigrant athletes to explore their talents, develop their skills and have the opportunity to learn about Cypriot culture through sports .
The initiative plays an integral role in supporting asylum seekers and refugees.
“You see the joy on their faces doing what they love,” says Hope Team coach Kostas Englesos and adds:
“However, for the children themselves who have dreams of something more in terms of the competitive part, we are definitely on a very good path, I see great progress.”
“A friend of my father helped me to leave the country so that they wouldn’t hurt me, they wouldn’t kill me… He saved me from the threats,” says one of the Hope Team basketball players.
