The British Royal Fleet watched it as it passed through Dover
The Russian frigate named “Admiral Gorshkov” carrying hypersonic missiles passed through Dover before leaving British waters where it was “escorted” by the British Royal Navy.
Moscow confirmed today that the frigate had passed the narrowest point of the English Channel – the Straits of Dover – sailing south into the Atlantic.
“The frigate will soon resume its missions in designated areas of the Atlantic,” Moscow’s defense ministry said in a statement.
The Royal Navy issued a statement on Wednesday saying HMS Portland was tracking the Russian warship and its accompanying tanker Kama as the pair sailed through the North Sea.
Vladimir Putin personally attended the farewell ceremony as the warship departed from the Severomorsk naval base in the Arctic on a voyage that will also take in the Mediterranean Sea and the Indian Ocean.
The Russian president boasted at the time that the West could not match his supersonic firepower.
“It has no equivalent in any country in the world,” he said. “I am confident that such a powerful weapon will allow us to reliably protect Russia from possible external threats and help safeguard our country’s national interests.”
The Gorshkov carries deadly 6,670 mph Zircon – or Tsirkon – nuclear missiles with a range of 625 miles for the first time in a major challenge to the West, as well as Kalibr missiles. Earlier, the guided-missile frigate staged war games in the Norwegian Sea “repelling airstrikes of a simulated enemy.”
As the warship sailed towards Britain, footage released on Tuesday showed the vessel’s capabilities as it took part in a series of military exercises.
