Echoing the protests of Italian wine producers, Antonio Tajani today described Ireland’s plan as “absurd”
Ireland plans to put health warning labels on all alcoholic drinks, including beer and wine, similar to those on cigarette packs.
Dublin is free to introduce warning labels about health risks linked to liver disease and cancer after it notified the European Commission of its plans in June 2022 and the Commission raised no objections during the next six-month moratorium period.
The European Union’s decision not to oppose Ireland’s plan to introduce health warning labels – like those on cigarette packs – for wines, beers and spirits has sparked widespread backlash in Italy.
Italian winemakers fear the move will set a precedent that other countries may follow and affect exports.
Echoing protests from Italian wine producers, Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani today described Ireland’s plan as “absurd”
“Ireland’s decision to introduce a (health warning) label on all alcoholic beverages, including Italian wine, is absurd,” Tajani tweeted.
The head of Italian diplomacy said that the decision was taken despite the opposition of the European Parliament and stressed that “this choice ignores the difference between prudent consumption and abuse of alcohol”. He said he would ask the European Commission to intervene by filing a complaint with the World Trade Organization.
