War in Ukraine: Finland wary of sending Leopard 2

If there is a joint European initiative to provide such tanks to the Ukrainian army, Finland will also need to contribute, the country’s president Sauli Niiniste told the STT news agency.

Finland appeared on Thursday cautious about sending German-made Leopard 2 heavy tanks to Ukraine, as other European governments weigh the possibility.

If there is a joint European initiative to provide such tanks to the Ukrainian army, Finland will also need to contribute, the country’s president Sauli Niiniste told the STT news agency.

He pointed out that Helsinki is in a special, delicate position, as Finland is not yet a NATO member state and neighbors Russia.

Should such an initiative take place, the Finnish contribution is not expected to be large.

Finland has more than 200 such tanks. To make any of them available to Ukraine would require Berlin’s approval from a contractual point of view.
