by

The crew of Geo Barents, a ship hired by Doctors Without Borders (MSF), rescued nearly 240 people who were in danger of drowning in the Mediterranean within a few hours, the non-governmental organization announced on Wednesday.

The migrants were aboard three boats that were in danger of sinking. With their rescue, the number of people on board the MSF reached 335, according to the NGO.

Even before yesterday’s rescues, Geo Barents had been waiting for days for approval to dock at a safe destination to disembark the migrants. Usually, this permit is given by Italy.

Ocean Viking, the SOS Méditerranée boat with 114 migrants, and the NGO Sea-Eye 4 boat with 216 others are also sailing in the same area. They also expect to be allowed to disembark these people in a safe harbor. for days.

The migrants leave mainly by the shores of Libya or Tunisia and try the risky crossing of the Mediterranean in order to reach a country of the European Union.

According to the UN, from 2014 until today, 23,000 people have lost their lives trying to cross the Mediterranean and reach Europe.
