Police warned residents to move away from the area
Clashes broke out today between environmental protesters and police forces at a large gathering of several thousand people in western Germanywith police reporting that protesters broke through barricades near an open coal mine.
“Police barricades were broken. To the world ahead of Luzerat: “Leave this area immediately!”, tweeted police who also reported protesters invading the coal mine site. Earlier, AFP journalists reported clashes between groups of protesters and police.
Several hundred environmental activists had gathered in this village in western Germany in Rhineland-North Westphalia to denounce the planned expansion of the open pit coal mine, which has become a symbol of their opposition to fossil fuels.
German police had earlier in the week dismantled barricades and dragged away activists who staged a sit-in protesting the coal mine’s expansion.
