Marcelo Pesci, 45, a Paraguayan prosecutor who mainly investigated drug-trafficking and money-laundering cases, was murdered on May 10, 2022, on Varu Island, off Colombia, where he was on his honeymoon with his wife, a Colombian journalist Claudia Aguilera, who announced via social networking sites that she was pregnant shortly before her husband dropped dead.

Two more people suspected of being involved in the May murder of a Paraguayan prosecutor specializing in corruption cases have been arrested, the Colombian prosecutor’s office announced yesterday.

Four accused of the murder were sentenced in mid-June by the justice to serve heavy prison sentences — 23.5 years — while a fifth suspect, who fled to Venezuela, was arrested in December.

The new arrests are those of two brothers, Andres Perez and Ramon Perez, who allegedly handled the organized crime, hiring executioners, the Colombian prosecutor’s office explained in a press release.

Attorneys for the Peres brothers were not available for comment.

“These two individuals, it seems, had taken over the supply” of the hit squad, making “the commission of the crime possible,” Colombia’s attorney general, Francisco Barbosa, summarized to reporters.

Authorities seized documents, clothing and a car used in planning the murder, Colombian prosecutors said.

A senior Colombian police officer estimated last year that the Brazilian First Command of the Capital gang may have been behind the prosecutor’s murder.
