Sicilian mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro – known as “The Devil” – has been caught by the police

Italy’s famous arch-mafioso Matteo Messina Denaro – known as “The Devil” – was caught by the police, as reported by the Italian news agency Ansa and Reuters.

Messina Denaro was the leader of Cosa Nostra and was on the most wanted list since 1993.

In fact, according to Forbes magazine, he was among the ten most wanted criminals in the world

Denaro took a leading position in Cosa Nostra – the Sicilian mafia – after the arrest of Salvatore Lo Piccolo in November 2007 and became known to Italians in 2001 when the magazine L’Espresso dedicated its cover to him entitled “Ecco il nuovo capo della Mafia” (This is the new boss of the Mafia).

After the deaths of the originals Bernardo Provenzano in 2016 and Salvatore Riina in 2017, Denaro became the “absolute boss”, the leader of the leaders of the Italian mafia.

The news of Denaro’s arrest was welcomed by Italy’s politicians. Matteo Renzi wrote that “it’s wonderful news, it’s a historic result. This is a day of celebration for the whole country. Congratulations to everyone.”
