Diplomatic crisis between London and Tirana after the statements of the British interior minister about Albanian immigrants. Albania today delivered a note of protest to the British ambassador following British Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick’s statements regarding Albanian irregular migrants, with the Albanian Foreign Ministry claiming that the British minister used “hate speech”.
Last year saw a significant increase in the number of Albanian nationals trying to reach Britain, with small boats arriving on southern British shores.
Some British politicians say migrants from Albania – a candidate country for European Union membership and a NATO ally – are not at risk of persecution at home, but are migrating for economic reasons.
Tirana’s diplomatic note came after a video was posted on Facebook on January 13, when Jenrik visited a center for migrants to be deported. During his visit the British minister praised the staff there for their work “finding Albanians, arresting them, putting them on buses, taking them to the airport and sends them back to Tirana”. The video has not been downloaded despite the reactions of Tirana.
The Albanian Foreign Ministry’s statement said that “this rhetoric of hatred and discrimination” should be avoided.
“Through this note, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its concern over the latest statements with discriminatory rhetoric against Albanians,” the statement underlines.
The Albanians were 42% of people headed to Britain using small boats between May and September last year, according to the British government.
In November, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama said a comment by the British government singling out a community “sounds more like screams from a madhouse”.
Rama and the prime minister Rishi Sunak they had a phone call in mid-December about the matter.
