About 25 million people in California affected by weekend flooding – Five-year-old boy missing
California is once again at the mercy of severe storms, which has already been hit this year by devastating floods and heavy snowfalls. The floods have claimed the lives of 19 people while a five-year-old boy is missing.
About 25 million people in California were affected by flooding over the weekend. However, according to meteorologists, the weather conditions are expected to improve during the week.
The National Weather Service (NWS) office announced that “periods of moderate to heavy snow will continue into Monday.”
Between 30 and 91 centimeters of new snow fell in parts of California’s Sierra Nevada region over the weekend, and more than 11,000 homes in the state remained without power Sunday, according to poweroutage.us.
US President Joe Biden declared a state of emergency on Saturday night.
Governor Gavin Newsom urged Californians to remain vigilant in the coming hours despite the fact that the weather is expected to improve starting tomorrow, Tuesday.
Between Dec. 26 and Jan. 9, parts of California saw up to six times more rain than usual, according to the NWS.
The storms battered coastal cities like Santa Cruz and San Francisco, opening sinkholes in roads and knocking out power to thousands of homes.
The rain also raised water levels in rivers across the state.
