“Greece should be faced with serious and specific charges” said AKP representative Omer Celik
Ankara repeated its provocative allegations of mistreatment of refugees from Greece through the representative of Erdogan’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), Omer Celik, speaking “of atrocities by Frontex and the Greek coast guard”.
As reported by SKAI’s correspondent in Istanbul, Manolis Kostidis, Celik went so far as to request that “Greece to face with serious and specific charges”.
As he argued, “unfortunately, in the new year, the refugee agenda continues to be considered based on some brutal approaches towards those trying to reach the Mediterranean and Europe. We have said many times about the atrocities brought about by the cooperation of Frontex and the Greek coast guard. We explained them. We and others have warned that the activities of this FRONTEX must somehow be put on the basis of law, in the field of human rights. Even the European Parliament did not approve the FRONTEX budget. It gave such a powerful message.”
However, he argued, unfortunately, this cruel mechanism between the Greek Coast Guard and FRONTEX continues. And they continue to work in ways that kill people in the waters of the Mediterranean, in a way that puts them at risk of death. This is undoubtedly a major setback for the EU.
“With the cooperation of the Greek Coast Guard and FRONTEX, the Mediterranean is turning into a grave for people who find death. Despite all the warnings, unfortunately, they continue these practices, puncturing their boats and torturing them in the most severe way,” he argued.
“When we see it from here, we are warning the EU once again this year, in the face of continuing this even more fiercely, even more brutally. Based on the cooperation of the Greek Coast Guard and FRONTEX, this prosecution of the people who find death there, nullifies all your words. It destroys all your approaches. We express once again that the necessary measures should be taken against this, that there should be strong investigations of FRONTEX and Greece to be faced with serious and specific accusations based on the violation of all these documents and agreements on this matter” Celik added defiantly.
