A large delegation of Ukrainians, which he leads the First Lady Olena Zelenskais traveling to Davos, Switzerland this week, with the goal of trying to persuade the West to deliver more humanitarian aid and weapons to the country.

“That’s why I’m here,” Kiev mayor and former boxer Vitali Klitschko said today in Davos, before reporters asking him about the need for further aid, nearly a year after the Russian invasion began.

“That is why it is very important to meet, to talk to each other. It is important to have personal relations,” the Ukrainian official added.

Ukraine was already in May at the center of discussions at the previous meeting organized by the World Economic Forum, in the Swiss mountains, which is traditionally attended by hundreds of political leaders and heads of large companies.

For the 2023 event, First Lady Olena Zelenska of Ukraine will be among the first international speakers to take the floor in person on Tuesday, while President Volodymyr Zelensky will speak via video conference on Wednesday.

Many Ukrainian officials are expected in Davos this week — including the mayors of Mykolaiv and Lviv, the ministers of economy, culture and digital transformation — with the Ukrainian delegation one of the largest delegations at the Forum.

“The Ukrainian economy has been completely destroyed, the infrastructure has been destroyed, the quiet life of our compatriots has been destroyed,” Klitschko also told reporters in Davos.

The war is “a tragedy as (Russian President Vladimir) Putin has the crazy idea of wanting to rebuild the Soviet Empire. We lived in the Empire and we don’t want to go back to the USSR,” the Ukrainian politician added, saying that “within the European family we see our future”.

As last May, Russian leaders and businessmen were not invited to Davos. After all, some of them are prohibited from traveling to Europe because of the sanctions.
