Exiled opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya today called her trial, which begins tomorrow in her absence, a “farce” and “revenge” of President Alexander Lukashenko, in an interview with AFP from Davos, Switzerland.
He also called Russian-Belarusian military exercises aimed at removing Ukrainian army forces from the front line in eastern Ukraine a “bluff”.
“These trials are not trials at all. It’s a spectacle, it’s a farce, it has nothing to do with justice,” complained the Lithuanian exile who is in Davos. “It is a personal vendetta by Lukashenko and his associates, not only against me but also against others who disagree with him,” he said.
Facing “ten charges,” including high treason and conspiracy to seize power, Tikhanovskaya said she tried to contact her court-appointed lawyer, but he never responded.
“I don’t even know what my so-called lawyer will do in this court tomorrow, how he will defend me,” he said today. “I don’t know how long this trial will last, how many days, but I’m sure I will be sentenced to many, many years in prison,” she added.
Tikhanovskaya also called today’s joint exercises of the Russian and Belarusian air forces a “bluff” on Lukashenko’s part, which allowed Russia to use his country’s territory to stage attacks against Ukraine.
“It’s a spectacle intended for the people of Belarus, to threaten them, to tell them: look, the Russian army is here, so sit quietly, don’t resist anything,” said anti-establishment Tikhanovskaya.
The main goal in her opinion is to “distract the attention of Ukrainian soldiers from the hot spots of eastern Ukraine, towards the border of Belarus”, in the north.
