Britain: Train drivers are preparing a new strike – They rejected the increase that was proposed to them

The offer made to them included a retroactive 4% pay rise for 2022 and a further 4% pay rise in 2023

Members of train drivers’ union ASLEF in Britain will go on further strike action on February 1 and 3 after rejecting a pay offer, the union said.

Earlier this month rail body Rail Delivery Group announced it had made ASLEF an improved pay offer in return for reforms to the way the railways are run, in a bid to resolve a long-running dispute in the sector.

“The proposal is not and could never be accepted, but we intend to commit to further talks,” said ASLEF general secretary Mick Whelan.

“They want to tear up the terms and conditions that we set by offering in return what is actually a pay cut,” he added.

The Rail Delivery Group had clarified that its proposal included a retrospective 4% pay rise for 2022 followed by a further 4% pay rise in 2023 and a commitment not to make compulsory staff cuts next year.

However, it also included changes, which the agency described as “vital and overdue”, to working arrangements, including Sunday shifts and training.

Educators and 100,000 more public sector workers, including border guards, are also expected to strike on February 1 over pay disputes.
