“Putin may announce a second wave of conscription in the coming days,” analysts at the Institute for the Study of War said on Tuesday.
There are more and more voices of analysts who estimate that the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin is preparing to make important announcements regarding the military, as Russia tries to build up its armed forces in Ukraine.
“Putin may announce a second wave of conscription in the coming days — most likely on January 18,” analysts at the Institute for the Study of War said on Tuesday.
The Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov announced yesterday, Tuesday, that Putin will hold a speech in St. Petersburg today, Wednesday, to mark the 80th anniversary of Soviet forces breaking the Nazi siege of Leningrad. This could be a good time to announce a second rally, analysts note, according to CNBC.
“Putin loves to use symbolic dates to appeal to the Russian people, and some Russian pro-war bloggers noted that he will use this opportunity for another military buildup,” the institute said in its daily analysis of the Ukraine war.
Russia has repeatedly said it will not launch a second wave of mobilization after mobilizing 300,000 reservists to join Moscow’s war in Ukraine last September.
Last Friday, officials of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense estimated that a second wave of mobilization on the part of Russia is underway.
“Ukraine’s military intelligence services do not rule out that Russia’s leadership will announce a new wave of mobilization in the coming days,” intelligence officials said in a statement, adding that another 500,000 Russians would be called up to “create strategic reserves.”
“Preparations for the announcement of the next wave of mobilization in Russia are already underway. At the legislative level, changes are being made to the laws of the Russian Federation regulating mobilization. Active training of training centers is also underway,” intelligence officials added.
