European Council President Charles Michel announced today that he is “en route to Kyiv” where he is expected to discuss new support measures for Ukraine with the country’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, who has called for faster arms deliveries.

The NATO allies promised Kyiv “increased support with heavier and more modern weapons” to counter Russian attacks.
“Ukrainians are fighting for their land, for the future of their children. But they are also fighting for our shared European values ​​of peace and prosperity. They need our support and they deserve it,” said the president of the European Council, which represents the 27 EU member states.
Michel clarified that in Kyiv he will also meet with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmyhal, as well as members of the Ukrainian parliament.
This visit takes place on the eve of a meeting in Ramstein, Germany of the contact group for Ukraine, which brings together about fifty countries led by the USA. Their talks will concern the coordination of aid to Ukraine and mainly the provision of heavy armor and modern anti-aircraft defense systems.
Britain has already committed to providing 14 Challenger 2 heavy tanks and Poland says it is ready to send 14 German-made Leopard 2 tanks if Berlin approves their re-export to Ukraine.
Pressure is mounting on German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to approve the Léopard 2 mission, which is used by the military in several NATO member countries.
