Both Baldwin and “Rust” gunsmith Gutierrez Reed face a maximum of 18 months in prison if convicted

The American actor Alec Baldwin, and “Rust” gunsmith Hannah Gutierrez Reed will be charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of filmmaker Halina Hutchins on the film’s set, authorities in New Mexico announced Thursday. Charges will be formally laid by the end of the month.

Both Baldwin and Gutierrez Reed face off maximum prison sentence of 18 monthsn if they are convicted. Assistant director David Halls, who handed Baldwin the loaded gun, took a plea deal and faces a misdemeanor charge.

“If any of these three people – Alec Baldwin, Hannah Gutierrez Reed or David Halls – had done their job, Halina Hutchins would be alive today. It’s that simple,” said special prosecutor Andrea Reeb.

New Mexico’s first District Attorney Mary Carmack Altwiss announced the charges Thursday in a statement on social media.

“The jury will decide not just whether they were guilty, but what definition of manslaughter they were guilty of,” the prosecutor’s office said on Twitter.

It is noted that Baldwin, 64, described the death of Hutchins, 42, in October 2021, as “tragic accident”.

At the same time, he attempted to clear his name by suing people involved in the handling and supply of the loaded gun that was handed to him at the shooting. The Hollywood star, who not only starred in but also co-produced Rust, insisted he was assured the gun was safe.

For her part, the gunsmith in charge of ammunition and weapons on the New Mexico set has repeatedly denied responsibility for Hutchins’s death by live fire. In January 2022, she filed a lawsuit against the company that supplied the ammunition, alleging that they supplied her with blanks mixed with regular bullets.
