Brazil: Lula wants to kill the “monster of the extreme right”

Its new president of Brazil, Lula Inacio Lula da Silva expressed hope today that “the new monster” representing the “fanatic far right” will be killed, not only in Brazil but also in other countries of the world.

“The rise of a fanatical far-right that loathes anything different, it is a monster that must be faced and slain”said center-left Lula, who defeated far-right Jair Bolsonaro in October’s presidential election.

“I have never seen Brazil seized by such hatred,” he said to university chancellors during an event at the presidential palace in Brasilia.

“But it’s not just about Brazil”, he continued and cited as examples the “USA under the Trump presidency”, Hungary and Italy.

“Although we have defeated Bolsonaro, we must also defeat hatred, lies, misinformation, bigotry… to civilize this society again,” he underlined.

Tackling the far right is one of the issues Lula said he wants to discuss with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, whom he will host on January 30, and US President Joe Biden, whom he will meet in the United States in February.

In an interview with Globo News television, Lula referred to the January 8 attacks by Bolsonaro supporters on the presidential palace, Congress and the Supreme Court.

“(Bolsonaro’s) decision to stay silent after the election, to travel to Miami as if he was avoiding something and to say nothing even after what happened, gave me the impression that he knew everything and had something to do with it all.” , the Brazilian president claimed. “Maybe Bolsonaro hoped to return to Brazil after a glorious coup,” Lula said, adding that “if his involvement (in the riots) is proven, he should be punished.”

Far-right Bolsonaro has denied any involvement in the January 8 riots in Brasilia, expressing his sadness.
