The lawyers of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange have appealed to the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, hoping that they will prevent his extradition to the United States, his fiancée announced on Thursday.
On December 10, the Court of Appeals overturned the ruling of the Court of First Instance, which had rejected Assange’s extradition to the United States, where he is accused of leaking thousands of secret military and diplomatic documents, mainly related to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Assange is being prosecuted for espionage and could face up to 175 years in prison if convicted in the United States. His supporters point out that this is a very serious attack on the freedom of the press.
Assange’s partner, Stella Morris, said on Twitter that his extradition decision was appealed today. Morris, who is a lawyer and mother of Assange’s two children, explained that the decision on whether the case will be considered by the Supreme Court is not expected to be issued before the third week of January.
Assange has been held in a high-security prison near London for two and a half years. He was arrested by British police in April 2019, after remaining for seven years inside the Ecuadorian embassy in London, where he took refuge seeking asylum while being released on parole. At the time, he said he feared Britain would hand him over to US or Swedish authorities, where he had been prosecuted for rape. This case, however, has now been filed.
