Excerpts from his deposition show that Donald Trump’s mistake was quickly corrected by the 76-year-old former president’s lawyer
Columnist Jean Carroll, who accuses him of raping his ex-wife Marla Maples, was confused by the former US president during his testimony, according to excerpts from court documents released in US District Court on Wednesday.
“That’s Marla, yes,” Trump said when shown a photo. “This is my wife,” he said.
The mistake was quickly corrected by the lawyer of the 76-year-old former president. But observers said that could undermine Trump’s claim that he could not have attacked Carroll because she is not his “type.”
However, this is not the first excerpt from the Trump deposition that has seen the light of day. Last week, Trump admitted that he had claimed the complainant had said “it was very sexy to be raped”.
Carroll, according to her complaint, claims that Trump raped her in a department store fitting room in the mid-1990s. Trump, however, denies this.
Carol sued Trump for defamation. New York law allows people who claim to have been victims of sexual assault long enough to file complaints within a specified time frame.
Trump was married to Maples, the mother of his daughter Tiffany, from 1993 to 1999. The photo in question, which Trump thought was of Maples, shows him at Carol’s company in the 1990s. In his deposition, Trump said it’s a download from an event.
In the excerpts, which were revealed last week, Trump said of Carol that “She said I did something to her that never happened. Nothing happened. I know nothing of this madness.’
He also accused Carol of accusing him of rape in order to promote her “very poor quality book”.
Addressing her lawyers, he said he would sue her “as soon as this is over and I’m looking forward to it. And I will sue you too.”
Trump also called Carroll “mentally ill” and falsely claimed she had talked about pleasure in the sexual assault.
A trial on Carroll’s rape claim is set to begin in April.
