Rust prosecutor’s harsh response to Baldwin: He doesn’t have immunity because he’s a star

“Baldwin didn’t do what he was supposed to do (…) We’ve talked to a lot of actors, first-timers and others, who said they always check their guns or have someone check it in front of them”

Tough answer to Alec Baldwin said New Mexico’s first district attorney, Mary Carmack Altwiss, who has taken over the case of Halina Hutchins’ fatal gunshot wound on the set of the movie Rust.

After a statement from Baldwin’s attorney, who spoke of a miscarriage of justice, the prosecutor’s office responded to CNN that the actor pulled the trigger — and that he was managing (as a co-producer) a “fast and ‘loose’ set” on the film that was plagued by security issues.

“There was a big lack of (safety) standards in this set. There were real bullets in the set, mixed with fake bullets. “Nobody was checking them, or at least not checking them consistently. Somehow they loaded a gun, delivered it to Alec Baldwin, he didn’t check it, he didn’t do the right thing to do to make sure he was safe or to make sure someone else was safe. He pointed the gun at Halina Hutchins and pulled the trigger,” the court official said. “Nobody did their job.”

While it may have been an accident, Altwis pointed out that Baldwin “doesn’t have immunity” because he’s a star. “Just because it’s an accident doesn’t mean it’s not criminal. They didn’t mean to do it, they didn’t intend to kill, but it happened anyway, and what happened was more than just negligence.”

“We’ve talked to a lot of actors, top stars and others, who said that they always check their weapons or have someone check it in front of them. An actor does not have immunity just because he is an actor. Everyone is equal before the law,” he explained.
