“Germany is among the top supporters of Ukraine financially. They are on the front lines even before the war starts,” Mr. Kirby said while speaking to an American television network.
Asked why Germany is wary of supplying heavy tanks to Ukraine, White House National Security Council strategic communications director John Kirby said Thursday that Berlin is well aware of what is at stake.
“Germany is among the top supporters of Ukraine financially. They are on the front lines even before the war starts,” Mr. Kirby said while speaking to an American television network.
German government officials are “working on this issue in a dominant way that is unique to Germany because of domestic issues. We have to respect that. We are grateful that they are considering the possibility of offering heavy tanks and we will wait to see the outcome,” he added.
Germany has made it clear that it will not approve the delivery of Leopard 2 heavy tanks to Ukraine’s military unless the US reciprocates by sending M1 Abrams, despite pressure from Kyiv and other European countries.
About 50 pro-Ukraine states are meeting today at the US military base in Ramstein (southwest Germany) to discuss further military aid to Kyiv.
