Ukraine: The situation at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant is worsening, the energy minister warns

The situation is aggravated both by the psychological state of the Ukrainian personnel and by the state of their equipment.

The Minister of Energy of Ukraine stated today that the conditions in Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant, controlled by the Russians, aggravated by the psychological state of Ukrainian personnel but also because of her state of his equipment.

The Ukrainian workers remained at the facility after it was seized by Russian forces last March. The nuclear power plant, Europe’s largest, has been repeatedly targeted, raising fears of a nuclear disaster. The two sides blame each other for the bombings.

“The situation is really getting worse. It’s getting worse, not only because of the psychological state of the Ukrainian specialists who are left there, but also because of the state of the equipment,” Herman Galushenko said on Ukrainian public television.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been trying for months to organize a safety zone around the facilities. Four specialists of this Organization remain in Zaporizhzhya on a permanent basis. Last week, IAEA director-general Rafael Grossi said he was concerned that the world was becoming complacent about the risks. Ukraine’s nuclear power company Energoatom says the Russians continue to build military fortifications around the nuclear facilities but are unable to operate the power plants due to a lack of personnel, and that around 1,500 Ukrainian experts have been barred from entering the site after refusing to sign contracts with Russian companies.
