Sylvia Colombo, David Wiswell and Igor Patrick start writing columns at Folha

by

The list of Mundo columnists gains three names as of this Friday (20th): Igor Patrick, David Wiswell and Sylvia Colombo will start to write weekly texts in Sheet.

Igor Patrick, 29, who already collaborates with the newspaper through the newsletter China, Terra do Meio, will also write about the Asian giant in the new space. The texts will be published on Fridays on the website and on Saturdays in the printed edition. “China is much more than a source of commodities or an important trading partner for Brazil, it is an ancient culture. People no longer see the country as exotic.”

Subjects related to Chinese culture and society will appear in the articles — for the journalist, a way to bring the reader closer to the topic. “We tend to see the other as something very distant. When we analyze the problems from the eyes of a young man who has just left university, a girl who deals with sexism in the job market or a person from an ethnic minority who need to integrate into a mostly Han society, we managed to humanize the problems,” he says.

Master at Tsinghua and Beijing Universities and researcher at the Kissinger Institute (USA), Patrick became interested in China while still a journalism graduate and reported on the country for different vehicles.

American comedian David Wiswell has a fixed space on Saturdays on the website and on Sundays in the print edition. In the column, the reader will find the most important events in the United States in a funny and satirical way, says he, who is also a writer.

“I use comedy to talk about politics because humor is a tool that makes terrible things easier to think about and digest.” Wiswell’s comedian career began when he was 20 years old and started performing in stand-up shows. Today, at 39, he is a freelance writer focused on comic content and writes scripts for films, TV shows and internet projects.

Journalist Sylvia Colombo, 50, in turn, will address Latin American issues in weekly columns published on Sundays on the website and on Mondays in the print edition. “We must stop thinking that Brazil and Latin America are different spaces, something that often happens due to a mistaken interpretation of history and a certain snobbish cultural tradition, which belittles our neighbors”, she says.

Columbus was a correspondent for Sheetbased in Buenos Aires, in two periods: from 2011 to 2013 and from 2016 to 2022. She also worked for the newspaper in London and was editor of Ilustrada and special reporter.
