The protest of the Los Angeles zoo outside the presidential palace of Chile caused a sensation yesterday Friday. Protesters carried the carcass of a lion, blaming a public service for the feline’s death.

Behind the corpse of Zeus, a 14-year-old lion, zookeepers held banners reading “Government kills animals” as stunned bystanders captured the protest on their cellphones.

The zoo management accuses the Agriculture and Livestock Service (SAG) of forcing wild animals to be drugged to read their microchips.

“SAG has required us to immobilize and anesthetize all our animals for the reading of their microchips,” said Cesar Canaba, legal counsel for the Los Angeles Zoo, located about 470 kilometers south of the capital Santiago. “We explained to them that anesthesia carries the same risks for animals as it does for humans,” he added and asserted: “They forced us to put our hands in blood.”

In a statement from SAG, it is emphasized that anesthesia is a routine procedure and that the measure is imposed for the safety of both the animals and the staff. “Unfortunately, one of the animals that underwent this procedure died,” the statement added. He condemned the way the zoo management had chosen for this particular protest, leaving open the possibility of taking legal action against it.

Police quickly cordoned off the area around the presidential palace and removed the lion’s carcass
