“I will use my jurisdiction to hold the elections earlier on May 14,” the Turkish head of state said during this meeting, clarifying that “it is not an early election (… ) but an adjustment in order to take into account the (date) of the examinations”.
“I am grateful to God that we will walk side by side with you, our youth who are voting for the first time, in the elections that will be held on May 14,” Erdogan said addressing these young people.
Polls show a close fight in the parliamentary and presidential elections, which will mark Erdogan’s biggest test in his two decades at the helm of the country, which is a regional military power, a member of NATO and a major emerging market economy.

Turkey’s presidential and parliamentary elections were scheduled to be held on June 18, but President Erdogan had previously said the vote could be held earlier. An official from the ruling AKP party previously said the June election could coincide with the summer vacation period when people travel.
