A historic building in Edinburgh was engulfed in flames this morning.

Dozens of firefighters battled the blaze at the building that once housed Jenners, the iconic department store in Edinburgh city centre.

Fire and Rescue Scotland said they were called to the former department store at 11.29am.

The building was engulfed in flames and a total of 10 fire engines were sent to the scene on Rose Street in the city centre.

No casualties have been reported and some roads in the area have been closed.

Eyewitnesses said large plumes of black smoke billowed from the basement of the iconic building.

A spokesman for Fire and Rescue Scotland said: “We were alerted at 11.29am. on Monday 23 January following reports of a fire at a building in Rose Street, Edinburgh. The operations center immediately dispatched two vehicles to the scene and, on arrival, firefighters found the building engulfed in flames.”

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “At around 11.35am. on Monday, January 23, police were called to assist Fire and Rescue Scotland with road closures following a fire at a building in South St David’s Street, Edinburgh. Police and emergency services are currently at the scene. As a result, several roads have been closed in the surrounding area,” the spokesman said.

People have been asked to take alternative routes and avoid the area.

The police cordon has been extended to cover the whole of St Andrew’s Square and employees of nearby businesses have been asked to evacuate the area.
