For the second day in a row, National Grid, the company that manages the national electricity network in Britain, is offering households a discount on their electricity bills if they keep energy-consuming appliances switched off during the evening peak hour.

Households with smart electricity meters that take part in the scheme will be rewarded with a discount of three pounds per kilowatt hour they save between 4.30pm and 6pm local this Tuesday.

The same offer was valid for the first time on Monday, between 5-6pm, as part of the “demand flexibility service”.

The goal of today’s offer is to save up to 341 megawatts of energy in the one and a half hour duration of the program.

This initiative is expected to be implemented ten more times during the winter.

The grid operator reiterated that the measure is activated not because of insufficient energy reserves, but “as a precaution, in order to maintain the margin of excess consumption capacity required”.

The increased energy demand of the last few days is due to the very cold temperatures and the drop in wind energy production due to apnea.

The mercury on Monday night fell to -9.8C in south-east England, although in usually colder Scotland the temperature is expected to rise to 12C during the day.
